It marks the beginning of the English operatic tradition. Despite its apparent musical simplicity, Purcell masterfully wove dramatic innovations into the score, creating a gripping interplay between soloists, choir, and orchestra that holds the audience in suspense throughout the entire hour-long piece. This Baroque opera has gained worldwide acclaim, with numerous interpretations existing today. However, Lviv Organ Hall offers a unique opportunity to hear it performed in Ukrainian. The libretto, originally by Nahum Tate, has been translated by Taras Demko—translator, poet, cultural manager, and co-director of the Organ Hall. A concert performance of the opera, without stage decorations, allows us to focus entirely on the beauty of the music and its meanings. While audiences today may interpret the themes differently than those in the 17th century, this only adds to its timeless intrigue. Notably, Dido and Aeneas will be performed at Lviv Organ Hall for the first time in nearly 20 years. The last performance was in 1995, featuring the Perpetuum Mobile orchestra of the then Lysenko Higher Music Institute, conducted by Heorhii Pavlii. Among the soloists was Vasyl Slipak, the world-renowned Ukrainian opera singer who tragically lost his life defending Ukraine in the Russo-Ukrainian war in 2016. We invite you to experience history and hear the legendary Dido and Aeneas performed live at Lviv Organ Hall!
